on. – Tamil is a Dravidian language predominantly spoken by the Tamil people of India and Sri Lanka, and also by the Tamil diaspora, Sri Lankan Moors, Burghers, Douglas, and Chindians.
Tamil is a language of two countries, Singapore and Sri Lanka. It has official status in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu and it is also used as one of the languages of education in Malaysia, along with English, Malay and Mandarin. Tamil is also spoken by significant minorities in the four other South Indian states of Kerala, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh and Telangana and it is one of the 22 scheduled languages of India. Tamil is one of the classical languages in the world. Tamil-Brahmi inscriptions from 500 BC have been found on Adichanallur and 2 and it has been described as the only language of contemporary India which is recognizably continuous with a classical past. The variety and quality of classical Tamil literature has led to it being described as one of the classical traditions.
A recorded Tamil literature has been documented for over 2000 years, the earliest period of Tamil literature, Sangam literature, is dated from ca.300 BC – AD300. It has the oldest extant literature among other Dravidian languages, the earliest epigraphic records found on rock edicts and hero stones date from around the 3rd century BC. More than 55% of the inscriptions found by the Archaeological Survey of India are in the Tamil language. Tamil language inscriptions written in Brahmi script have been discovered in Sri Lanka, the two earliest manuscripts from India, acknowledged and registered by the UNESCO Memory of the World register in 1997 and 2005, were written in Tamil. In 1578, Portuguese Christian missionaries published a Tamil prayer book in old Tamil script named Thambiraan Vanakkam, the Tamil Lexicon, published by the University of Madras, was one of the earliest dictionaries published in the Indian languages.
According to a 2001 survey, there were 1,863 newspapers published in Tamil, Tamil belongs to the southern branch of the Dravidian languages, a family of around 26 languages native to the Indian subcontinent. It is also classified as being part of a Tamil language family, the closest major relative of Tamil is Malayalam, the two began diverging around the 9th century CE.
According to linguists like Bhadriraju Krishnamurti, Tamil, as a Dravidian language, descends from Proto-Dravidian, linguistic reconstruction suggests that Proto-Dravidian was spoken around the third millennium BC, possibly in the region around the lower Godavari river basin in peninsular India. The material evidence suggests that the speakers of Proto-Dravidian were of the associated with the Neolithic complexes of South India. The next phase in the reconstructed proto-history of Tamil is Proto-South Dravidian, the linguistic evidence suggests that Proto-South Dravidian was spoken around the middle of the second millennium BC, and that proto-Tamil emerged around the 3rd century BC.
The earliest epigraphic attestations of Tamil are generally taken to have been shortly thereafter 2. – Gautham Vasudev Menon, more commonly known as Gautham Menon, is an Indian film director, screenwriter, and producer who works predominantly in Tamil cinema. He has also directed Hindi and Telugu films, which are remakes of his own Tamil films, Vaaranam Aayiram won the National Film Award for Best Feature Film in Tamil.
Menon produces films through his London Stock Exchange-listed Photon Kathaas film production company, Menon was born to a Malayali father and a Tamil mother on 25 February 1973 in Ottapalam, a town in the Palakkad district of Kerala. Although born in Kerala he grew up in Trichy, Tamil Nadu and he Dropped his bachelors in Mechanical Engineering from Mookambigai College of Engineering, Pudukkottai. His mother insisted he became an ad film maker by shooting various commercials and he went on to work as an assistant director for Minsara Kanavu in 1997, in which he also appeared in a cameo role. About the making of the film, Menon revealed that he found it difficult as the team was new to the industry with only the editor of the film, Suresh Urs, being a prominent technician in the industry.
Despite initial reservations, Menon did so and Ratnam was unimpressed, however Menon has cited that he thought that Madhavan felt sorry, the film also featured Abbas and newcomer Reemma Sen in significant roles, whilst Menon introduced Harris Jayaraj as music composer with the film. The film was advertised as a Valentines Day release in 2001 and told the tale of a man who falls in love with the girl engaged to his ex-college rival. Menon was initially apprehensive but said it took half an hour to agree and against his intentions and he changed a few elements, deleted certain scenes and added some more for the version. The failure of the left him disappointed, with Menon claiming in hindsight that the film lacked the simplicity of the original with the producers intervention affecting proceedings.
Later on in the year, it was reported that he was working on a film tentatively titled Iru Vizhi Unadhu, though the project did not develop into production. In 2011, the producer of the film approached him to remake Rehnaa Hai Terre Dil Mein with the producers son Jackky Bhagnani in the lead role, Menon returned in 2003 by directing the realistic police thriller Kaakha Kaakha featuring Suriya, Jyothika and Jeevan in the lead roles. The film portrayed the life of a police officer and how his life is affected by gangsters. The lead actress Jyothika asked Menon to consider Suriya for the role, the film consequently opened to very positive reviews from critics on the way to becoming another success for Menon, with critics labeling it as a career high film. Furthermore, the film was described as for action lovers who believe in logical storylines, producer Vipul Shah approached him to direct the Hindi version of the film in 2010 as Force with John Abraham and Genelia DSouza, and Menon initially agreed before pulling out again.
Menon and the producer, Dhanu, also floated an idea of an English-language version with a Chechnyan backdrop. The film told another episode from an officers life, with an Indian cop moved to America to investigate the case of psychotic serial killers before returning to pursue the chase in India.
During the shooting, the unit ran into problems after the producer had attempted suicide and as a result, Menon subsequently convinced him to stay on as they had taken advance payments 3. – Saravanan Sivakumar, known by his stage name Suriya, is an Indian film actor, producer and television presenter, best known for his work in Tamil cinema. After making his debut in Nerukku Ner, Suriya landed his role in Nandha. Suriya has also found success with science fiction films like 7aum Arivu and 24, as of 2010, he has won three Tamil Nadu State Film Awards and three Filmfare Awards South.
In 2013, Suriya founded the production house 2D Entertainment, Suriya is the eldest son of Tamil film actor Sivakumar and his younger brother Karthi is also an actor. Suriya married co-star Jyothika in 2006, after being engaged for several years, in 2008, he began Agaram Foundation, which funds for various philanthropic activities. The year 2012 marked his debut as a presenter with the Star Vijay game show Neengalum Vellalam Oru Kodi. Suriya was born in 1975 to Tamil film actor Sivakumar and his wife Lakshmi as Saravanan and he attended Padma Seshadri Bala Bhavan School and St. Bedes Anglo Indian Higher Secondary School in Chennai, and obtained his under graduate degree B. Com from Loyola College, Chennai. Suriya has two siblings, brother Karthi and sister Brindha.
Suriya is married to Jyothika, with whom he worked with in as many as seven films, the couple, after being together for several years, got married on 11 September 2006. They have two children, a daughter named Diya and a son named Dev, before his career in films, Suriya worked at a garment exports factory for eight months. To avoid nepotism, he did not reveal himself to his boss as Sivakumars son and he was initially offered the lead role by Vasanth in his film Aasai, but he rejected the offer citing a lack of interest in an acting career.
He later debuted in Vasanths own 1997 film Nerrukku Ner, produced by Mani Ratnam when he was 22 years of age, the stage name Suriya was bestowed to him by Ratnam to avoid a clash of names with established actor Saravanan. The name Suriya was frequently used for characters in Ratnams films, Vijay, who would also go on to become a leading contemporary actor in Kollywood, co-starred with him in the film. This was followed by a series of roles in commercially unsuccessful films in the late 1990s, in 2001, he starred in Siddiques comedy film Friends, also co-starring Vijay. His major break in acting came in the form of Nandha, playing the role of an ex-convict who is very attached to his mother, he received a Tamil Nadu State Film Award for Best Actor. His next venture was Vikramans Unnai Ninaithu followed by Mounam Pesiyadhe directed by Ameer Sultan, in 2003, he starred in Gautham Menons Kaakha Kaakha, a film about the life of a police officer. The film opened to positive reviews with a critic from Rediff.
Com claiming that Surya as Anbu Selvan fits the role, the film became a Blockbuster at the box office. His portrayal of a happy-go-lucky village crook with a touch in Balas Pithamagan, along with Vikram, won him Filmfare Award for Best Supporting Actor – Tamil 4. – Ramya, is an Indian film actress and politician.
She predominantly acts in Kannada films and also appears in Tamil, Ramya made her acting debut in the 2003 Kannada-language film Abhi, opposite Puneet Rajkumar. She has become commercial success at the box office, Ramya is a two-time Filmfare Award for Best Actress - Kannada winner. Ramya was born in Bangalore, Karnataka on 29 November 1982 and her mother Ranjitha is a senior member of the Congress Party in Karnataka, while her foster father R T Narayan was an industrialist. Ramya is from the Vokkaliga caste by birth and her parents originally hail from Mandya. She studied at St. Hildas school in Ooty, and in Sacred Heart School, Chennai, in 2004, Spandana debuted in the Tamil film industry, also under the name Ramya, with the film Kuththu alongside Silambarasan Rajendar.
The film only managed a run at the box office as did her next Tamil film Giri. Her debut film, however, gave her the name Kuthu Ramya and she had two releases in Kannada as well, Ranga S. Kanti, a story set against the backdrop of borders. In 2006 she starred in Julie, a remake of the same-titled 1975 Hindi-language film and she played the role of a single, unwed mother in the film, which failed to attract audiences. Her next Kannada release, Jothe Jotheyali was a successful venture and her final 2006 release, Kavitha Lankeshs Tananam Tananam, an average grosser that released to mixed reviews, fetched Ramya her first Filmfare Award for Best Actress. She had described her role in the film as little complex, in 2007, Ramya starred in three feature films, the first releasing, Arasu, co-starring Puneet Rajkumar and Meera Jasmine, was a huge hit.
She then appeared as a sex worker, which was made to create awareness about AIDS and was part of Mira Nairs AIDS Jaago project and her fourth 2007 release was Polladhavan, where she acted against Dhanush. The film, released during the 2007 Deepavali period, was considered a commercial success, rajinikanth was all praises for the entire crew of Polladhavan. Her first 2008 release, the Kannada film Mussanjemaatu with Sudeep, was a big hit and her next film was the Tamil film Thoondil. Ramya later stated that she regretted accepting the film, later that year, she starred in the films Bombaat and Anthu Inthu Preethi Banthu, with the former went on to perform well at the boxoffice. Her final release in 2008 was Gautham Menons Vaaranam Aayiram for which she changed her name to her actual name Divya again. She had also dubbed in her own voice for Vaaranam Aayiram and she did not have any releases in 2009, since both her films Bhimoos Bang Bang Kids and Jothegaara got delayed heavily due to financial problems 5. – Sameera Reddy is an Indian actress who primarily appears in Hindi films.
She has also appeared in a few Telugu, Tamil and Malayalam films, Sameera was born on 14 December 1980 in Rajahmundry, Andhra Pradesh to a Telugu Reddy family. Her father Chinta Poli Reddy is a businessman, while her mother Nakshatra, referred to as Niki by her daughters and in the media, was a microbiologist and worked with an NGO. She has two siblings, Meghna Reddy, a former VJ and supermodel, and Sushma Reddy, a Bollywood actress and model and she did her schooling at Bombay Scottish School in Mahim, Mumbai and graduated from Sydenham College.
Sameera described herself as a tomboy and the ugly duckling in the family, while citing, I was plump, had glasses, Reddy first appeared in ghazal singer Pankaj Udhass Aur Aahista music video in 1997, when she was a graduate. Sameera was meant to make her debut as an actress in Saravana Subbiahs Tamil film, Citizen, during late 2000 and she caught the attention of Bollywood and was cast in a pivotal role in the 2002 Hindi film Maine Dil Tujhko Diya. In 2004, she appeared in Musafir opposite Anil Kapoor, Aditya Pancholi, Reddy appeared in the Tamil film Vaaranam Aayiram directed by Gautham Menon, opposite Surya Sivakumar, which was a blockbuster. Reddys acting and modest portrayal of a confident and down-to-earth girl earned her rave reviews and she was signed for two films of Gautham Menon, Yohan Adhyayam Ondru and Dhruva Natchathiram. Reddy was a judge for the Miss Sri Lanka Online contest in 2012, Reddy is a big fan of American talk show queen Oprah Winfrey. She met Oprah during the visit to India at the welcome party hosted by Parmeshwar Godrej.
As the television celebrity was reportedly impressed by Sameeras saree, she was presented a similar saree as a gift by the actress before she left India, Reddy got married to Akshai Varde an entrepreneur on 21 January 2014. – Simran Bagga, known professionally only as Simran, is an Indian actress who has predominantly appeared in Tamil, Telugu and a few Malayalam films. She debuted in Bollywood and acted in Hindi films, before starring in her first Tamil film V. P, having a string of successes in her early career, in 1999, Simran received critical praise for playing a blind woman in Thulladha Manamum Thullum. However the turning point of her career came with the success of Vaali which made Simran the most successful actress in the industry and she received her first Filmfare Award for Best Tamil Actress for Kannathil Muthamittal, as the mother of an adopted 9-year-old daughter. Other than romantic dramas, Simran had also appeared in two comedy films alongside Kamal Hassan, Pammal K. Sambandam and Panchathantiram, both released in 2002. With the success of the 2004 sci fi film New, Simran left the industry following her marriage with her childhood family friend Deepak Bagga.

Anthonys high school, Versova and she speaks Punjabi, Hindi, English and Tamil. Simran is a dancer and can perform Bharatanatyam and Salsa. She married Deepak, her family friend, on December 2,2003. They have two sons, Adheep and Aadit, Jaya Bachchan saw Simran presenting the show Superhit Muqabla on Doordarshan’s Metro channel, and subsequently offered her a leading role in her production, the romantic drama Tere Mere Sapne. She then starred in supporting roles in Muqaddar, Angaara and Daadagiri, Bal Bramhachari, Agni Morcha, Gunda Gardi opposite Aditya Pancholi, Ayub Khan, meanwhile, she was acting in South Indian languages and was a huge star in Tamil and Telugu cinema.

Following successful debut in Tamil and Telugu films, in 1998 she had her first release in K. Ravikumars Kondattam opposite Arjun Sarja and she also appeared in a supporting role with Akkineni Nagarjuna and Deepti Bhatnagar in Auto Driver.
Both performed averagely at box office and she tasted her first success with Ajith Kumar in Aval Varuvala, a remake of 1997 Telugu film Pelli. Her role was received by the critics. He composes scores and soundtracks predominantly for Tamil films, while also composed for a few films in Telugu, Harris Jayaraj was brought up in Chennai, He was born into a middle class Tamil Christian family.
He studied at Krishnaswamy Matric School, K. Nagar and his father, S. Jayakumar, was a noted film guitarist and an assistant to Malayalam music director Shyam and later became a noted musician and film composer. At age six, Harris began his training in carnatic music.
His father wanted him to become a guitarist and made him learn classical guitar from Mr. Abdul Sattar, Harris scored the highest mark in Asia on his 4th grade exam of Trinity College of Music, London. He started his career as a guitarist in 1987 at age twelve. He started playing keyboard and developed interest over synthesizers and he worked under noted composers including Raj-Koti, A. Rahman, Mani Sharma, Karthik Raja, Vidyasagar. While working as a programmer under Rahman, he composed music for various television commercials including a Coca-Cola commercial featuring actor Vijay.
In his early years, he admired music composers M. Viswanathan, percussionist Aruljothi Balagopal, A. Rahman, Harris debuted as a film composer with Gautham Menons Minnale.
The album was received, particularly the song Vaseegara was exceptionally popular. He received the Filmfare Award for Best Music Director – Tamil for his work in Minnale, the following soundtrack albums 12B and Majunu met with high acclaim and praise. He also composed for the Hindi remake of Minnale titled Rehnaa Hai Terre Dil Mein, most of the tunes from the Tamil version were retained in the Hindi version too, and only two fresh tunes were composed. He then worked in Lesa Lesa directed by Priyadarshan, the title track of Lesa Lesa was the first song in India to be released as a single prior to a film soundtrack album release. Harris made his debut in Telugu cinema with Vasu and he received the Filmfare Award for Best Music Director – Tamil, Tamil Nadu State Film Award for Best Music Director and ITFA Best Music Director Award for Kaakha Kaakha, starring Suriya and Jyothika.
This film directed by Gautham Menon was a commercial success. In its Telugu remake Gharshana two new songs apart from the Tamil version were added to suit the taste of Telugu audience. The song Uyirin Uyire reused as Cheliya Cheliya in Telugu and Khwabon Khwabon in Hindi had effective use of words which later became a signature element in Harris songs. Harris once again paired up with director Jeeva on Ullam Ketkumae after 12B, the music was appreciated for its excellency and synergy with the atmosphere in and out of the movie.
